The Rt. Rev. Archimandrite, Msgr. George Appleyard
An Invitation to Prayer
O Dawn, splendor of eternal light,
O Sun of Justice,
come and illumine those who sit in the darkness
of the shadow of death.
-Come, let us welcome him!
Leaders restrained me without cause,
but my heart was anxious for your dictates.
I will rejoice in your dictates,
as one who finds rich spoils.
I hate and abhor injustice,
but I love your law.
Seven times a day I praise you
for the judgments of your righteousness.
Those who love your law have great peace;
there is no stumbling block for them.
I yearned for your salvation, O Lord,
and loved your commandments.
My soul has kept your testimonies,
and loved them very much.
My soul has kept your decrees and your testimonies,
for all my ways are before you, O Lord.
A reading adapted from Basil’s, On the Human Condition
When you hear of dust, learn not to be uneasy. Do not judge a human being by his appearance. What is there about you that you consider great? When notions come to you that cause you to puff up with vanity, remember your origins and how you were created. “God took dust from the earth and molded the human being.” How can you forget what is your own? You become unmindful of what is your own when you turn a blind eye to the earth. If you stay connected to the earth and remain in harmony with it, because everything you do-when you walk on the earth, rest on the earth, give judgment on the earth, whether great or small-is done on the earth, an awareness of your humility will always be close at hand.
Almighty God, through the mouth of Daniel the Prophet12:2 you said that many of those asleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life but others to shame, and you ordained glory for those whose names are inscribed in your book. Grant that the name of every member of our Order be found written in the Book of Life, along with all our loved ones and all people of good will, to the praise and glory of your Son, Jesus Christ.
