The Presentation of Our Lady in the Temple

An Invitation to Prayer

Bless the Lord, Ananiah, Azariah and Mishael;

sing hymns and highly exalt him forever.

—For he rescued us from the Underworld,

and saved us from the grasp of death,

and rescued us from the burning flames,

and released us from the fire.    (3 Dan 88)

Psalm 44/45:10b-17

The queen stood at your right

dressed in cloth of gold richly embroidered.

Listen, daughter, and see—

and turn your ear.

Forget your people and your father’s house

because the king desired your beauty

and he is your master.

The daughters of Tyre will pay homage with gifts,

and the richest of the people will beg for your favor.

The daughter of the king of Heshbon enters in all her splendor,

dressed in cloth of gold richly embroidered.

Her maids of honor follow her to the king;

her companions will be presented to you.

They will be accompanied with joy and gladness,

and led into the palace of the king.

Sons will be given to you in place of your fathers,

and you will make them rulers over all the world.

They will remember your name from generation to generation,

and all the people will acknowledge you forever,

yes, forever and ever.

From a letter of Basil to the citizens of Satala, #102.

Moved by your request, I have arranged for the care of your church, and promise, on the Lord, that I will do everything within my power. So I have been compelled, as it were, to poke myself in my eye. The great regard in which I hold you has made me overlook the relationship and intimacy which I enjoyed since my boyhood with the person in question, since your request makes a stronger demand on me, overlooking all that has made him near and dear to me, the sadness of the people who will be deprived of his ministry, as well as the tears of all his relatives. Nor will I consider the affliction of his aged mother, for whom he is the sole support. I have put aside all these considerations, keeping only one objective in view, giving your church the blessing of being led by such a  man to aid it, so long distressed now at being without a leader, and needing great and powerful support to flourish. So much for what concerns me. On the other hand, I ask you not to disappoint my expectation, and the promises I have made to him, that I have sent him to close friends. I ask every one of you to try to surpass each other in love and affection for him. I beg you to show this noble rivalry, and to comfort his heart by the greatness of your concerns for him.

A Prayer

O Jesus, it was concern for a newly married couple, not only to spare them embarrassment but also to foster their joy and happiness at their wedding, that your mother, Mary, approached you on their behalf. May I follow that example and repeatedly make recourse to you on behalf of others, for reasons serious or light. Amen.
