The Rt. Rev. Archimandrite, Msgr. George Appleyard

An Invitation to Prayer

“Thus says the Lord who bolstered the earth
and gave breath to the people upon it
and Spirit to those who walk across it.”
–”I, the Lord God, have called you to righteousness,
so I will take you by the hand and strengthen you.”Isaiah 42:5b & 6a

Psalm 118/119, Beth

How does a youth keep to the straight way?
By holding to your words!
I have sought you with my whole heart,
do not let me stray from your commandments.
I have planted your dictates in my heart,
so that I might not sin against you.
Blessed are you, O Lord, teach me your laws.
I repeat all your statutes on my lips.
I delight in the way of your decrees
as much as in the greatest wealth.
I will study your commandments
and put my mind to your ways.
I will meditate on your statutes,
and I will not forget your word

A reading adapted from Basil’s, On the Holy Spirit, Chapter 9

The Spirit is naturally intangible. It can only be accessed by its goodness, filling all things with its power, but communicated only to the worthy. It is not shared in separate portions, but distributes its energy according to the measure of (a person’s) faith. Its essence is simple, its powers diverse; it is completely present in each and is present everywhere as one. It is shared without being sundered and apportioned without loss. It is like a sunbeam whose delightful light shines on an individual as though shining for that person alone, and yet it radiates grace completely sufficient for the whole human race. It is enjoyed by all who share it according to the individual’s capacity, and not because of its power but of the person’s nature.

A Prayer

O God, who has chosen us to be an Order of Knights under the blessed protection of Saint Lazarus, grant that we–in full devotion to You, and abounding in neighborly charity, and with fresh generosity prompted by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit–may show ourselves invincible against the enemies of the Cross, remaining faithful unto death, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
