An Invitation to Prayer

Light dawns for the righteous and gladness for the just heart. —So take delight in the Lord,

be grateful to remember his name. (Ps. 96:11 & 12)

Psalm 5:7-13

Through the abundance of your mercy I will enter your house;
I will worship toward your holy temple with deep respect for you. Guide me in your justice, O Lord, because of my enemies,
make your way straight before me.

For there is no truth in their mouths, and their hearts are empty.
Their throat is an open grave,
their tongues are used to lie.

Judge them, O God.
Let them fall by their own schemes; drive them out for their many violations, for they have offended you, O Lord.

And let all who hope in you be glad.
They shall rejoice forever,
and you will abide with them,
and you will be the boast of all who love your name for you will bless the just person, O Lord.

You have crowned us with a shield of favor.

From Basil’s work, On Baptism.
With a sense if obligation we share with you a few statements culled from the many sayings if of Lord himself concerning those who wish to become his disciples. And since he promised that we shall see the kingdom of God if we are born again and that by being born of water and the Holy Spirit we shall enter into the kingdom of God, I think it necessary to add a few of the many references about the kingdom of heaven so that we don’t fail to gain it. One of the sages said that the little things in life are not trivial, and almost everyone knows this from practical experience. Even so, we can become more firmly convinced of this by noting the exactness of the Biblical prescriptions for priests and animals brought for sacrifice. If any blemish, no matter how small, were to be found, or any mutilation, even of just a tiny part, like an earlobe, a man could not be a priest and such an animal not fit for sacrifice. Notice how much higher the standard when Jesus says, “Someone greater than the temple is here;” and when he said, “From those to whom much has been entrusted, much more will be required.” He indicated that we should take greater care of the soul than of the body,

A Prayer

It is the abundance of your mercy that allows me to enter your house and worship you, O Lord. And it is because of your great mercy that I can hope to find eternal happiness, beginning even now and growing with my years. I must ask more than that you guide me in your justice and make straight your path before me. I must beg you for a gift of strength and endurance in walking that path and doing justice. Hear me, O Lord, for the sake of your mercy and love. Amen.
