The Rt. Rev. Archimandrite, Msgr. George Appleyard

Holy Monday

An Invitation to Prayer

Purify our hearts from all false religion and piety,
as you drove the merchants and the cashiers out of the Temple.
—And make our hearts and minds a House of Prayer
that we may be acceptable to you. [Cf. Matt 11:15-17]

Psalm 135/136:1-9

Recognize the Lord, for he is good,
and his mercy is eternal.
Recognize the God of gods,
for his mercy is eternal.
Recognize the Lord of lords,
for his mercy is eternal:
the only one who does such great marvels,
for his mercy is eternal;
the one who made the heavens by his intellect,
for his mercy is eternal;
the one who fixed the earth upon the waters,
for his mercy is eternal;
the one who alone made the great lights,
for his mercy is eternal
—the sun to govern the day,
for his mercy is eternal,
the moon and the stars to govern the night,
for his mercy is eternal.

From St. Basil’s Eucharist Prayer

You gift us with knowing your truth, Father. But who can do justice in proclaiming all your mighty deeds? Who can adequately praise you? Who can describe all the marvels your have done over the whole span of time? Master of all; Lord of heaven and earth, and of every creature visible and invisible! You are seated on the throne of glory and yet pierce the depths. You are eternal, invisible, incomprehensible, indescribable, and immutable. So we sinners cry out and proclaim that you are holy, truly holy, and there is no limit to the majesty of your holiness.

A Prayer

O Jesus, the Apostle Paul told us that we are being joined to you in order to create a house, harmoniously arranged, as a holy temple in which your Father will dwell by the Spirit. [Eph 2:21-22] Remove from us whatever does not serve so noble a purpose, and fit us out for so extraordinary a calling. May we always be your House of Prayer for all the people. Amen.
