The Rt. Rev. Archimandrite, Msgr. George Appleyard
An Invitation to Prayer from St. Francis’ Canticle
Praised be you, my Lord, through Sister Water.
-Which is very useful and humble
and precious and chaste.
O Lord, my God, I put my trust in you,
save me from all those who harass me
and rescue me;
lest, like a lion, they snatch my soul
with no one to free me or save me.
O Lord, my God, if I have done any of this:
if there is crime on my hands,
if I have paid back evil to those generous with me,
then let me fall impoverished before my enemies;
let the enemy chase my soul and seize it,
and trample my life to the ground
and settle my glory in the dirt.
A reading adapted from Basil’s Homily on the Judgment of God
I do not think Paul was speaking about himself, for he had Christ speaking within him and he was guided by the one who told the crowd that he spoke to them in parables so that they might not understand the divine mysteries of the Gospel because they had already closed their eyes, and they were not really listening to grasp what they heard, and their foolish hearts had become gross.Cf. Matt. 13:15 Since, by their own volition, they had already become blind by the darkening of the eye of their soul, they lost, as a consequence, the ability to see higher things. David, fearing this affliction, said,”Put light in my eyes lest I sleep in death!”Ps. 12:4 From this, and similar evidence, I concluded that, in general, as a result of not knowing God, the evil of vice produces a perverted understanding and, in particular, that the disagreements of the world come from the fact that we have made ourselves unworthy of the Lord’s leadership.
“Put light in my eyes lest I sleep in death,”Ps. 13:6 the light of your Holy Spirit, O God. Like the effects of fatigue, I may be unaware that I am “falling asleep” to the world of the Spirit in which I have made camp by joining this Order. The novelty of belonging to a noble company of chivalry having worn off, I may slide back into a worldly way of thinking and acting. Keep me vigilant, as any soldier on duty must be vigilant.
