The Rt. Rev. Archimandrite, Msgr. George Appleyard
An Invitation to Prayer
Wisdom was in the company of God,
in which he took delight.
—Happy to be with him every moment of every day,
and happy to be with the human race. (Prov. 30-31)
Come, let us adore the Wisdom of God! (I Cor. 1:24)
I will exalt you, O Lord, for you have raised me up
and did not allow my enemies to gloat over me.
O Lord my God, I cried to you and you healed me.
You have led my soul back from the underworld, O Lord;
you have snatched me from those going into the pit.
Make music for the Lord, you devoted ones,
proclaiming the memory of his holiness.
There is death in his rage but life in his will.
Weeping encamps in the evening but joy in the morning.
I said in my prosperity, “I will never be shaken.”
By your will, O Lord, you added strength to my beauty;
but then you looked away and I became anxious.
I will cry out before you,
and make my petition before my God.
What profit is there in my blood
if I go down into corruption?
Will the dust acknowledge you,
or proclaim your truth?
The Lord heard, and took pity on me;
the Lord became my helper.
You turned my grief into a joy for me,
You undid my sackcloth and girded me with gladness
so that without end my glory may make music for you.
O Lord, my God, I will acknowledge you forever!
A reading from Basil’s Long Rules, #50 cont.
If someone shows his displeasure in a manner opposite to what I have laid out, he demonstrates that he is not displeased for God’s sake, nor that the offender has harmed himself, but because of his own love of honor and authority. Zeal ought to be exercised for the glory of God, who is dishonored by a violation of his decrees, but it is right to show the mercy of fraternal charity to a brother who is endangering his salvation by sin; for “the soul that sins shall die.” (Ezek. 18:4) But we should be stirred to anger by every sin because it is sin, and show our conviction by the measure of the penalty we impose.
I thank you, Lord God, for the way you do all things for my good, even when I do not recognize your kindness. But for what I am aware of, I look up to you as the Savior and benefactor of my soul. Give me the grace and strength to praise you unceasingly, and to work out my salvation with the help of your Christ and utilizing the precious and potent gifts of your Holy Spirit. And because you are the King of Peace, increase my spiritual awareness and order my life as you see best for me in your Providence. Amen.
