The Rt. Rev. Archimandrite, Msgr. George Appleyard

An Invitation to Prayer

Let us pay attention to the wisdom of God,
and listen carefully to his words.
—So that we may have deep understanding,
and his directives will protect us. (Prov. 5:1&2)

Psalm 22(23)

The Lord shepherds me,
I shall lack nothing.
He has settled me in in a verdant place,
near refreshing waters he nurtures me.
He has restored my soul.

He has guided me on the paths of righteousness
for the sake of his name.
Yes, even if I walk under the cloud of death,
I will fear nothing bad,
for you are with me—
your rod and your staff comfort me.

You have set a table for me in front of those who oppress me.
You have anointed my head with oil,
and your cup makes me tipsy, it is so strong.
Your mercy will follow me all the days of my life,
and the House of the Lord shall be my home for days on end.

A reading from Basil’s Long Rules, #45;
that the superior should have a lieutenant to serve in his absence.

It may be necessary for the superior to be away from the community for medical treatment, business, or some other reason. Another member should be chosen by him—and others who are competent to judge—to be responsible for the community in his absence so that there may be someone to speak words of exhortation and consolation to those remaining at home. This will insure that, when the superior is away, the community will not adopt a popular form of government, as it were, leading to the abrogation of the rule and customary discipline, but will preserve the established and approved ways for the glory of God.

A Prayer

Eternal Father, almighty and all merciful God, have mercy on me and on all members of our Order. May our good desires and actions please you. May we always enjoy the comfort of recognizing that you are our shepherd, even when we find ourselves in the dark valley of death, knowing that you will eventually lead us to a sunlit place beside peaceful waters and verdant fields in Paradise if we but remain faithful to you. Strengthen me to keep my promises to you, for I firmly believe you will keep yours to me. Amen.
