The Rt. Rev. Archimandrite, Msgr. George Appleyard

An Invitation to Prayer

Thus says the Lord,
“I will sprinkle clean water upon you,
and you will be cleansed from all your filthy deeds.”
—“And I will give you a fresh heart and a new Spirit,
replacing your heart of stone with a heart of flesh.”
—Ezekiel 36:25a & 26a

Psalm 118/119

Daleth

My soul is prostrate on the ground,
revive me to keep your word.
I told you of my ways and you heard me,
teach me your judgments.
Make me understand the way of your judgments,
that I might comprehend your marvelous works.
My soul is listless with exhaustion,
strengthen me with your words.
Keep me from the path of iniquity,
and by your law have mercy on me.
I have chosen the path of truth,
and have not forgotten your rules.
I cling to your dictates, Lord,
do not shame me.
I run the course of your decrees,
because you have increased my understanding.

From Basil’s On the Holy Spirit, chapter 9

By the aid of the Spirit hearts are lifted up, the weak given a hand, and those making progress are brought to perfection. Shining on those cleansed of every stain, in a reciprocal relationship the Spirit makes them spiritual. The way a sunbeam falls on bright and transparent objects and makes them brilliant—and they reflect from themselves a fresh brilliance—so souls in which the Spirit abides become spiritual by illumination from the Spirit and radiate their grace to others.

A Prayer from St. John Damascene’s Statement of Faith

O Lord, you brought me as a naked baby into the light of day, for nature’s ways always obey your commands. By the blessing of the Holy Spirit, you prepared my creation and my existence, not because people wanted it or flesh desired it, but by your ineffable grace. The birth you prepared for me was such that it surpassed the laws of our nature. You sent me forth into the light by adopting me as your child and you enrolled me among the children of your holy Church. You nursed me with the spiritual milk of your divine utterances. Lead me to pasture, Lord, and graze there with me. Do not let my heart lean either to the right or to the left, but let your good Spirit guide me along the straight path. Whatever I do, let it be in accord with your will, now and until the end. Amen.
